HERE'S SOME OF OUR FAVORITE PROJECTS

ART DIRECTION

NIKE CITY CLASH

During the 2018 World Cup Nike created a traveling tournament taking place in a different borough each week. The teams competed against each other wearing jerseys designed by four artists represent four parts of NYC; Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn, and Queens. ABSTRKT led the art direction for the four teams representing uptown. Selecting local uptown resident and artist Tony Peralta to create the designs.

THE POETRY OF THE EARTH...

The Poetry of Earth was inspired to highlight the lost connections with nature and books and transformed an old office meeting room into a peaceful paper forest. Completely constructed head-to-toe from donated used books, the viewers were invited to walk down the trail and immerse themselves in the calming experience. The installation featured tree trunks created from old book covers, a waterfall created from hundreds of attached pages, live foliage hanging from the ceiling and delicate fine art pieces displayed on the walls.

 NEW BALANCE 574 LAUNCH

To celebrate the launch of the New Balance 574 sneaker, we were commissioned to create an interactive experience related to the phrase “light as air.” As as result, we filled a large room with 3000 white balloons, created a wall of balloons along the back and on the balloon wall projected the promotional 574 commercial. At entrance of the room, the 574 sneakers were displayed on complimenting white pillars. Visitors were encouraged to play within the pool of balloons and engage with the product.

NIKE BETRUE NYC

Whether you are part of the LGBTQ community or a supporting ally, Pride Month is an important time to celebrate diversity, commemorate history, and recognize achievements in the constant fight for equality. This series of embracing hands are representations of those that come together with love and support in honor of equal rights. It is in these simple gestures that we are reminded of the undeniable power of unity.

SKY DIAMOND

The artist’s largest sculpture to date, was a 40-foot 3D diamond created using fluorescent light tubes to make 23 prism shapes formed into two equilateral triangles. The massive diamond dominated the industrial space engaging viewers from all angles. Acting as a shadow, a diamond-shaped pool of water was cast along the floor, capturing the intense reflections and allowing the installation to feel twice in size. This treatment allowed viewers the unique experience of engaging with both the positive and negative space of an object at the same time.

EXTROSPECTION

Contained within a completely darken room, EXROSPECTION places viewers within an extreme altered reality, examining the limits of human perception and how we emotionally experience a space devoid of light.

Appearing to float as if suspended in space, glowing out of the darkness, the large-scale intertwined shape directs the viewer’s eyes around the space, splicing the darkness with interlacing arcs and gestural motions created from interlocking buckets illuminated from within. Mirrors intensify the illusory experience of spatiality, disorienting the viewer further by simulating an open void beyond the tangible walls of the room.

RESONANCE STRUCTURES

The term refers to the flow of electrons within molecules but could also represent what Buckminster Fuller referred to as spaceship earth or the ubiquitous playground climbing dome he is wrongly credited for inventing.

The ceiling-height semisphere is constructed from repurposed scaffold pipe and appears to recede into the wall itself. The actual resonance, which one may feel as much as hear, seems to emanate from the piece itself. It is an experimental soundscape created by sound designer Alex Oka based on the low decibel resonance of the earth itself.

NIKE AIR MAX SUSTAINABLE STRAPS

In collaboration with Handwerk, we worked with Nike to design, fabricate, and install shoulder straps and fasteners for shoe boxes made of recycled plastic bottles.

The boxes themselves, designed by architect Arthur Huang, are already the second life for the material that they are made of.  Once bottles, they are now shoeboxes.  With the straps, the boxes have the potential to have a third life as a carried vessel. With the boxes heavily engineered and mass produced, we designed our straps to be handmade, imperfect, and versatile.  There is no stitching in the straps, as they are only knotted, the cord can be untied and used again elsewhere.

LAY YOUR WEAPONS DOWN

This four-story high mural of a multiracial couple embracing, situated on Berry Street in Williamsburg, NYC. The spur-of-the moment wall was inspired by Faith47’s ongoing photographic series of couples kissing on the dance floor in Evol nightclub in Cape Town. “The mural speaks to the notion of home not being a place, but a feeling of human interconnectedness,” says Faith, who’s been traveling most of the year for work.

The couple’s faces are obscured, leaving the exact nature of their intimate moment to the audience’s imagination. Typically for Faith, the piece has multiple meanings for the artist too. “It’s about the profound nature of connectedness between two people; the fragility of human emotion and the power of touch; the breaking down of race; as well as the need for humans to abandon violent behavior and find strength within our vulnerability.”

MHOAUNTDH

This installation address the humanistic gestures we use to communicate with each other thru language whether it be by mouth or by hand, and how transposing it into technology is affecting us.  As Socrates cautioned at the inception of writing, he feared that it would "create forgetfulness in the learners’ souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember it themselves.” Now, as physical communication declines with the raise of new technologies, allowing the thumb and screen to replace both the mouth and the pen and paper, this exhibition brings new relevance to question the gains and losses in contemporary human interactions.

PERCEPTUAL SHIFT

A 3D halftone sculpture using 1,252 wooden balls, pieces of paint, and braided fibers creates the form of an eye completely dependent on the physical position of the observer.

Depending on where the viewer stood in the room, the eye either perfectly formed or was completely disfigured to revealed the hundreds of pieces hanging from various heights and depths to create its shape. The piece was inspired by the current controversy surrounding information privacy, mass surveillance and data collection.
